What is it really?
I’m a Georgia girl, so the whole ‘country’ thing comes pretty naturally to me. Sweet tea, close family, faith, football, sunshine, and a southern accent that I can’t always hide… all of that fits just right. However, in trying to find my identity as an artist, for some reason I tended to subtly push away from the country vibe at first. Maybe that’s because now ‘country music’ has many different connotations. However, I don’t think I really understood the depth of country music roots until I realized all of the iconic artists who fell under this genre at one time or another.
We’ve got the golden age of country (Loretta Lynn, Emmylou Harris), honky tonk (Hank Williams), rockabilly (Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash), folk (Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie), bluegrass (Alison Krauss), country soul (Ray Charles), country rock (Neil Young, The Eagles, The Allman Brothers), country pop (John Denver, Dolly Parton, Roy Orbison), and the list goes on… who wouldn’t want to be associated with these people?
And then of course, a lot of good country music is a subdivision of old soul music… Muddy Waters, Otis Redding, Little Richard, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, and Jackie Wilson. Good gosh! A big part of me wishes I lived when they were in their prime putting out all that good music.
So needless to say, I’m goin’ country. And I’m proud of it. My kind of country comes from the roots, where all of the greats started. I want to write songs about real life. Stories with meaning and emotion. Music that can ease your mind and take you to a new place. When we’re all trying to do life and live in this crazy world together, it’s nice to be able to turn on your radio and hear something you can connect with. Something real to get you through the day.
Happy Wednesday!
